What is IP warmup, and why does it matter so much?
If you’ve sent emails before, you’ve probably heard the term thrown around. Here’s the short version of what email warmup actually is, why ISPs care, and what happens if you skip it.
- 01
What email warmup actually is
Email warmup (also called email warm up services or an IP warm up service) is the process of gradually increasing your sending volume from a new IP or domain so mailbox providers learn to trust you. Start low, send to your most engaged contacts first, and grow over weeks, not days.
- 02
Why ISPs care so much
A brand-new IP has zero sending history. Gmail, Outlook, and Yahoo don't know if you're legitimate or a spammer. They use sending patterns, engagement signals, and authentication to decide. Warmup is how you build that history responsibly.
- 03
What happens if you skip it
Sending high volumes from a cold IP looks like spammer behaviour to ISPs. You get throttled, blocklisted, or routed straight to spam. Worse, that reputation damage can take months to undo. Skipping warmup almost always costs more than doing it right.
Most email warmup tools are just automated bot networks. Here's what makes MailMonitor different.
Automated warmup tools use bot accounts to email each other back and forth, inflating engagement metrics that look good but mean nothing to real ISPs. We don’t do any of that. Here’s the honest comparison.

What an 8-week MailMonitor warmup actually looks like
A realistic warmup takes time. Here’s a typical 4-phase engagement, though your exact timeline depends on your sending volume and audience.
- Weeks 1-2
Foundation
We audit your DNS, set up SPF/DKIM/DMARC, clean your list, and align your authentication. No real sending yet, just setup.
- Weeks 3-4
Initial sends
Low-volume sends to your most engaged contacts only. We monitor inbox placement across all major ISPs every day.
- Weeks 5-6
Ramp-up
We gradually increase volume, expanding to less-engaged segments while watching your reputation score and adjusting if needed.
- Weeks 7-8
Scale
Full sending capacity reached with a healthy sender reputation. You're ready to scale confidently and we hand back the keys.
